Disclosure & Barring Service

Disclosure and Barring Service

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are now called DBS checks.

From June 2013 the DBS no longer sends a copy of the Disclosure Certificate to the British Judo Association. It is the applicant’s responsibility to send the original Disclosure Certificate to the Safeguarding Team at BJA Head Office (if they are not signed up to the Update Service). All Disclosure Certificates are returned to the applicant by recorded delivery which requires a signature on delivery for security.

Update Service

The Update Service is an online profile where you can store multiple DBS Checks, this is most beneficial for people who require many DBS checks whether it be for work, hobbies or charity work.

The workforce the BJA require is an enhanced check in an adult and child workforce. Once you have signed up to the Update Service you will never have to complete an application form (subject to required workforce and level of the check). Please be advised you only have a six week window to sign up, four weeks before your application is submitted to the DBS and two weeks after your Disclosure Certificate is printed.

When your DBS check expires (every three years) you will be required to complete a Consent to Perform a Status Check form (below) to enable us to check your status.

If your Disclosure holds new information the BJA will then request a copy of your Disclosure certificate from the DBS and follow the Positive Disclosure policy. This policy can be found at the bottom of this page and in the Safelandings Polices and Guidelines.

Please follow the link below for more information about the Update Service

Checking a DBS

All DBS applicants are required a face to face identification document check this can be done by a CWO, Technical Officer, Service Manger and recognised Checker .

Depending on which documents you provide the checker will cross the relevant verification box on the inside of the DBS application. In section X61 on the reverse of the application it must clearly state the following:-

then on the line below it must state – COACH or VOLUNTEER IN A JUDO CLUB

In section X62 it must state - BRITISH JUDO ASSOCIATION

Please do not sign section Y as this is for Head Office only.

If the application has errors it will be returned to either the applicant or checker by recorded post for adjustments.
