Getting Started on the Mat

If you want to give judo a try then there's lots of ways you can get started:

In a club

A good place to go is one of your local judo clubs - there's over 950 to choose from across the UK operating at different times through the week - you can find clubs local to you with our find a club tool.

Some offer specific beginners courses whilst others will integrate you into their novice groups, but all will teach you the basic skills you need to start the journey to 1st Dan and the coveted black belt. You will learn a range of techniques as part of British Judo's highly rewarding non-competitive grading syllabus and after a couple of months be ready to take a grading and get your first mon or kyu grade.

The majority of British Judo's clubs will give you a free first lesson, some even more, so there's no risk to try the sport and find out if its for you.

In school/college/university

Welsh Judo work with a range of providers to deliver judo in educational environments. Our Enjoy Judo coaches deliver judo within schools at a grass roots level giving children their first taste of the sport - from here they can progress into the club environment.

There are a range of clubs within college and university sports societies. Not only does it keep you fit and is great fun, its also a great social session to meet like minded people.

At the gym

Whilst not strictly judo, judofit takes core training techniques used by the GB squad and roles them into a high energy, fun session delivered in fitness studios across the country. Find out if your local gym delivers judofit at

What do I need to get started?

All you need to try judo is basic gym kit - a T-shirt and jogging bottoms.

Most clubs have a judogi jacket they can loan to you for your first sessions, after which you may choose to purchase a basic gi (available from JudoStore).
